CIS Study Center Procedures
In order to maintain a clean and quiet learning atmosphere and to allow students to take full advantage of the CIS Study Center's resources, we expect that all students accept their responsibilities to follow the established guidelines of the CIS Study Center Policies & Procedures. Publications are available at the Front Desk. Please ask any CIS Study Center staff member for a copy.
CIS Study Center facilities are open only to currently registered CIS students. Students will be asked to present a current Miami-Dade College ID and validated schedule upon entrance to the CIS Study Center.
Students are responsible for practicing safe computing at all times while in the CIS Study Center. Accordingly, and for the protection of all CIS Study Center users, diskettes may be disinfected by CIS Study Center staff at the Front Desk if requested. However, the CIS Study Center assumes no liability whatsoever for any loss of data or damage to the diskette resulting from disinfecting.
Eating, drinking, smoking, cellular phones, audible beepers, children, and guests are not permitted in the CIS Study Center.
The CIS Study Center has been designed to provide a quiet, productive work atmosphere. As such, loud or disruptive behavior is prohibited. Disruptive students will be asked to leave the CIS Study Center and may be prohibited from further use.
The computers are to be used for MDC course-related activities only; the playing of computer games and chatting is not permitted in the CIS Study Center.
Because of software copyright and College Network policies, students are not allowed to install their own software on any CIS Study Center computer at any time. All students' work must be saved to a diskette; no work should be saved on the hard drive or network drive because students' work on these drives will be erased daily.
Unauthorized duplication of software or any other copyrighted material is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action by the College. Printing services are limited to a single copy of a given document and the output is only guaranteed to be legible.
Students are responsible for clearing their station and work area when they complete their work. All scrap paper should be placed in the blue recycle bins located around the CIS Study Center.
Students may not turn any hardware on or off and should not unplug or move any hardware. Any hardware problems should be reported to the CIS Study Center staff immediately.
The CIS Lab's trained staff can be identified by their MDC picture ID. Tutors are available to help students in using the available hardware and software; simply raise your hand for assistance or come up to the Front Desk. Questions about specific assignment should be directed to the course instructor.
Students must use headphones when listening to audio presentations of any kind; a limited number of headphones are available for CIS Study Center use. Students must leave a picture ID at the Front Desk while using headphones, and will be held responsible for returning them in good condition when done.
Hours of operation will be posted at the entrance of the CIS Study Center and are subject to change without notice although, every attempt will be made to notify students of any changes.
It is recommended that students name their file as they open a new document. Then save the file frequently (every 10 minutes should be sufficient). The College will not be liable for any damage whatsoever (including loss resulting from system interruptions or loss of information) arising out of the use or inability to use any equipment and / or software in the CIS Study Center.
Computer seating space and certain course resources are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The CIS Study Center staff reserves the right to limit student time if there are others waiting to use the equipment or course resources.
The CIS Study Center accommodates students with special needs; wheelchair accessible tables are available; CIS Study Center staff are happy to assist when requested.
The Front desk area of the CIS Study Center is off-limits to everyone except the CIS Study Center staff. CIS Study Center telephones are for use by CIS Study Center employees only.
When a fire alarm sounds, all occupants of the CIS Study Center must leave immediately.
All personal property brought into the CIS Study Center is the sole responsibility of the owner.
Failure to comply with published CIS Study Center Policies and Procedures may result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to being banned from the CIS Study Center and dismissal from the College. Any acts of theft or vandalism such as writing on tables, walls, equipment, etc., will result in strong disciplinary action by the College.
The Computer CIS Study Center staff will do everything in its power to make sure that you have a good learning experience, which, hopefully, would contribute to your academic pursuits.
